William Thomas Sterling, one of the substantial farmers of this township, was born in Knox County, Ohio in the year 1839, and came to Jackson township in Van Wert County in the year 1865, where he settled on section 31. Three years later he married Martha J. Longwell, George and Mary Longwell's daughter. Together they reared five children. He is now living in section 32.

William T. Sterling Enlisted from Union County, Ohio Aug 6th 1862 and was mustered into the United States service at Delaware, Ohio Aug 19th 1862, as a private of Company "K" 96th Regt. Ohio Volunteer Infantry under Captain Horatio C. Hamilton & Col. Jos. W. Vance. Later N. K. Brown to serve three years or during the war - He was mustered out & HONORABLY DISCHARGED July 17th 1865 at Mobile, Alabama on account of the close the war. The Regiment was assigned to the 2nd. Brig. 1st, Div. 13th Corp's Dept of the Gulf
