obituary that appeared December 18, 1901 in the Miami Gazette states: "Sarah, daughter of James and Nellie Burnside Smith, was born on March 14, 1831 at Mt. Holly, Warren County, Oh., was united in marriage to Charles Githens January 1, 1853, to this union were born eight children, of whom only three survive. Charles H., Eva Miller and Ida. She was left a widow July 16, 1895 and has been an invalid ever since. Death released her at the home of her daughter in Dayton Thursday, December 12, 1901. She has been a member of the Middelerun Baptist Church since her eighteenth year. The remains of Mrs. Githens were brought to Waynesville on Sunday, a devotion held at the M.E. Church at 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. W. M. Coffman, after which her sorrowing friends followed her to her last resting place in Miami Cemetery. She was a good woman and filled her place in life faithfully."
