BIOGRAPHY: Henry Clay attended school in a one room schoolhouse near his house on what is now Howard Rd. Then attended Brown High School in 1922. During his high school days he became the first printer of the Brown High School Thrasher, which was the Yearbook. After graduation he started work at Jeffrey Manufacturing Company in Columbus. There he met another employee, Ethel Reed, who was from Amanda (Fairfield County) Ohio.
Ethel was the daughter of John M. and Sallie (Davis) Reed. John was a Rural Route Postal carrier for the Amanda area. John Reeds parents who also lived in the Amanda area where William and Mary Jane (Deaner) Reed. Sallie Davis, also from the area, was orphaned with her brothers and sisters at an early age . Her parents where Joseph & Jemima (Walker) Davis. Joseph Davis served in the Civil War in the 43 Reg. Co. I O.V.I..
On June 28, 1924, Henry Clay and Ethel Reed were married in Columbus, Ohio. Ethel was born November 26,1895, which made her almost ten years Henry's senior. They had their first, and only, child, John Albert Clay ,on February 22,1925 in Columbus, and resided in Columbus until the depression. They purchased their first home on Howey road. In 1932, Henry lost his job at Jeffrey. To keep from losing the home, they rented the house, then moved back to Delaware. During the next three years they lived with Henry's brother, Glenn ; in alog cabin on Hogback road; and, for a while, with Norton and Ora Belle. About 1939, Henry purchased the Scenic Border News in Hocking County. They sold their Columbus house and moved to Laurelville, Ohio. The newspaper was also a job printing shop. In 1942 the paper closed its doors, due to the war. At one time Henry & Ethel owned some property in Hocking County but due to the lack of access to the road they sold it. Henry and Ethel returned to Columbus in the Hilltop area, where they bought an old corner market and converted it into the Clay Printing Company.
On John Clays return from the service he joined his father in the business. In 1959, Henry took a year off from the printing business to build a new house on the land where his father had built many years before. I remember going to the Ogden Ave. printshop after school, and spending time with grandmother Clay. She always looked out for my sister and myself, until dad got off work. We often went to Ethels mothers house in Amanda,Sallie (Davis) Reed, who lived until 1961. Henry's wife, Ethel, died Feb.13,1964, before the house was finished. Henry remained at Odgen Ave., address until he sold his inventory to John Taylor, a sales representative for a dairy machinery and packaging company. Henry's son John, then became manager for Mr.Taylor, and the printing equipment, which Henry retained, and the business was moved to a warehouse at Kenny Road and W. Lane Ave.
Henry continued to do printing for some of his former customers in addition to Mr. Taylor's work. After three years, Henry's association with Mr. Taylor was dissolved when Henry's son John, went to work at Ross Laboratories in Columbus. Henry moved his printing equipment to the Delaware, Oh. land where he had built the new house. He converted the center section of the barn into a print shop and did some post retirement printing for friends and neighbors.
During the time of his association with Mr. Taylor, Henry became reacquainted with a friend from his Brown School days in Kilbourne, Oh. Her name was Ellena (Bauman) Aigner and she had been widowed a few years before they renewed their friendship. They married and lived on the farm . Ellena brought her daughter Nola and grand daughter Teri into the family. Teri has since married Mike Stockdale and have a son Lee. I loved Ellena who brought a lighter side to the more serious, Henry. Ellena died June 6,1981 and Henry, was found dead on the living room floor, by a neighbor who was delivering a Christmas gift on December 22,1981. Henry is buried at the Amanda township Cemetery, Fairfield Co. with Ethel.
