BIOGRAPHY: Nicy E. Clay was born on May 18,1833 in Ohio. This information was found by visiting the South Woodbury Cemetery in April of 1988. With my parents John & Pat Clay and my wife Robin we located the graves of the following. Doty/John Doty born 23 Dec 1828 : died 20 Jun 1905 Wife of " Nicy E. Clay born 18 May 1833 : died 15 Nov 1872 ,Lucy H. Clay born 15 Sep 1806 : (Nicy's mother) died 13 Aug 1879. These graves were all on the same stone and appeared to be like new. Also to the right of this grave was Henry D. Clay's grave . Nicy married John Doty on Nov.21,1850. and is on record in the Morrow County Courthouse Marriages. John Doty was the son of Stephen W. Doty Jr.,who was the son of Stephen W. Doughty Sr. from Maine. Stephen Sr. was a Revolutionary War veteran who moved to Ohio in the 1820's. John Doty served in the Civil War at Camp Chase (Columbus,Ohio) with the 88th O.V.I as the regiment carpenter. John and Nicy had several children and lived in Woodbury. Lucy Clay lived with John Doty and Nicy (1860,1870 census) and to the best of my knowledge did not remarry. She outlived her daughter by seven years. from Doty History by Effie James Russell & Judy Mosher Ebersole date unknown.(located at the Morrow County Library Genealogical Annex) "John first married Nicy Clay and during her lifetime they lived in South Woodbury where Rev. Wier now lives. They had four Children Ansel, Della, Bertha and Artie. Ansel married Emma Bunker and they had two children Frances(F) and Harley(M). Frances married Charles Hullen of Mt. Gilead and moved to California where she died. Harley married Goldie Osborn of Mt. Gilead, they had several children. Lived in Phoenix Arz." "Della married Frank S. Osborn and they lived until the last few years of their lives in the Alum Creek neighborhood. They had one daughter Agusta. She lived and married Wiley McDaniel he died in [1913]. A few years later she married Frank Bonham and moved to Houston, TX. Her parents went there to their home. Her father dying their in [1924] and her mother in 1937. The husband Frank Bonham was killed in 1933." "Bertha never married" "Artie Doty married Dan Woff of near Ashley they have two children Mahlow of California, and Mrs. Ruth Wickham of Cleveland, Ohio. She has two sons." "After the death of his first wife John married Roxy Powers of Ashley,Ohio. They had two daughters Ella and Laura. Ella married Harry Olmstead of Ashley and had a son. Both Ella and her son are dead. Laura married Ed Bailey and had one son. Laura and Ed lived east of South Woodbury. Their sons name was Irwin. Irwin married and had two sons and taught school in Tiffin for some years."
John Doty remarried (1880 census) to Roxie Powers who was much younger then himself and took up several business ventures as wagonmaker, mill operator , and built a house in Ashley. I have also dicovered after talking to Ruth 'Benidict' Hare who is related to the Benidicts from Woodbury, that Bertha Doty never married and Della Doty married Frank Osborn and was a dress maker, Mary Artie Doty married Daniel Henry Wolff and lived in the area.. Della taught Mrs. Hare's elder sister (90 in 1989) how to sew.
