Ohio Historical Museum Holding Title/Object Quilt Maker Benedict, Phoebe Haveland Wing (1808 - 1885) / maker, quilter Place of Origin State/Province : Ohio County : Morrow Township : Peru Town/City : Peru Date of Origin 1865-1875 Bracketed Description 1 item Object Description: Quilt has nine-patch squares set on point spaced by solid blocks. The 725 pieced blocks are 2-inches square and are set 25 across x 29 down. The fabrics are scrap cottons from the period in colors of pink, blue, brown, green, and cream with patterns of stripes, florals, and geometrics. The solid block fabric is a cream and gray scalloped print. The border has three strips, two of pink/white tiny floral fabric with the cream and gray scalloped print in the middle. The four corners are 5 1/2-inch nine blocks of the border fabrics. The applied binding is a red, cream and gray floral stripe. The backing fabric is cream with tiny pink star-flowers and cream leaves. The quilting is straight stitching on the grain through the diagonal blocks forming a grid and the border has double stitching on the diagonal.

Notes Benedict and her family was a member of the Society of Friends. Historical Notes Family history indicates that Benedict made the quilt around the Civil War.
