BIO:History of Van Wert County Ohio by Thaddeus S. Gilliland:1906 page 226-227..."George Longwell moved to Jackson township in 1851 and located in the woods with his wife and children. His nearest neighbor was two miles distant. After he had built his cabin and cleared a few acres of land, he found he was the victim of a mistake and had located on another man's land. He then lost a year's labor and was compelled to commence anew again. There is a very fine sulphur spring near his house that at an early day was frequently visited for the benefit to be derived from it's healing waters. page 654.. Charles Longwell ... " The parents of Mr. Longwell were pioneer settlers in Jackson township, locating there in 1851. The Father [George] was a native of Delaware Co. Ohio, and the mother [Mary Sheets] of Virginia. After a long and useful life, George Longwell died in July, 1872. His wife survived him until April 2[sic], 1901. They where worthy members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the parents of 13 children." page 672.. Albert Longwell.."George Longwell was born in Delaware Co. Ohio, and in 1851 removed, thence to Jackson Twp.,Van Wert Co., settling, throught a mistake, on the land adjoining the property for which he had already paid. After residing there for two or three years, his mistake was discovered by a survey of the land, and he then located on what is now our subjects farm of 160 acres, now finely improved and valuable. Then it was a wilderness, even the pioneers axe not yet having sounded throught the forest, which still sheltered deer and other animals. Right in the woods he built his log cabin and with manly courage began clearing the land around it. Hardships of the most trying character were finally overcome, and as years passed, Mr. Longwell was able to enjoy the fruits of his hard and faithful work. He was a man of prominence in his section and the first township election was held in his cabin, the mother of our subject generously preparing an old-time, abundant election dinner... He served in numerous township offices and had been recognized as an honored and valued citizen. Politically he was identified with the Republican party."
