bullet  General Notes:

His will in Loudoun Co. Va. written 6 Sept.1800, probated 8 Dec. 1800,final settlement 8 May 1821. In the will he mention wife Elizabeth and if she should remarry the landgo to his 2 sons Joseph Thomas and the youngest Phineas Thomas, Should the boys die with outissue the land go to his brothers,Phineas Thomas, Evan /Evans Thomas and Jacob Thomas. A John Thomas and Joseph Groves posted bond for the estate.(Joseph Grovevery possibly Elizabeth Groves brother). Also in the estate a John Gardner was paid$2,39 on 5 Nov. 1801 it does not say for what. Also a James Nichols was paid $2.50 on 24 Nov.1801 butdoes not say for what.

Griffith Thomas brother Phineas Thomas was the final excentor of thewill for the final settlement.

In 1816 some one was paid 40.00 a year for 8 years for the board, clothingand schooling of Joseph Thomas, and 40.00 a year for 10 years for the board, clothing andschooling of Phineas Thomas. The settlement does not say who was paid the money ,now if the boyPhineas Thomas was 21 in 1816 he would have been born about 1795 then Elizabeth could well be hismother.

These 2 boys have to date (June 1999) not been found with ElizabethGroves Thomas Gardner and her 2nd. husband John Gardner. So feel they may have stayed with theUncle Phineas Thomas.

The age on Griffith Thomas tombstone is hard to make out but look likeage 58 so he was alot older than Elizabeth, so it is possible she was the 2nd. wife.

All reports state that Elizabeth Groves Thomas was a widow with 2children when she married "the Old Scottsman" John Gardner but no mention was ever made if thechildren were male or female or ever named them in way. So we really feel that this Griffith Thomaswas our Elizabeth Grove Thomas Gardners 1st husband. The information was found by Connie and Pete Bradish, of Cocoa, Florida.

In studing (6 July 1999) the estate settlement more, see page 2 markedpage 208, Phineas Thomas turned in a bill for keeping the boys, theyoungest Phineas Thomas 40.00 a year for ten years, so in ca. thatyoung Phineas Thomas was with Uncle 10 years before he turned 21, hecould have been born 1789 if that is correct then he would not beElizabeth Groves son, plus the fact that they stayed with the UnclePhineas Thomas but boys ages 11 and 13 often resent step fathers.

I have always been curious just why in all the write ups in History Booksand others the 2 children of Elizabeth Grove Thomas Gardner were nevernamed or ever mentioned if they were male or female.

In checking old Quaker records many old Thomas in Pa. used the namesPhineas,Griffith,Evan but this Griffith Thomas was not Quaker as you willnote he had some 6 or 7 slaves at the time of his death.
