Location: west edge of Decatur City Earliest tombstone burial: Feb. 18, 1853 Sect. A #9-10 Latest tombstone burial: Feb. 3, 2001 Sect. E #6-8 Last update: May 2001 HISTORY: This is a township cemetery. The road along the east side is the borderline with the town of Decatur. There is an ornate iron gate leading into the cemetery. The earliest burials were just inside the gate, to the left and right. The city of Decatur is one of the oldest settlements in the county. It was first laid out and then designated as the county seat in 1851. The county seat was moved to Leon in 1853. The first tombstone burial was for John M. Houston, age 21, who died in 1853. He was probably the son of Matthew and Jane Houston who were pioneers to Decatur, buying 1000 acres of government land within 2 miles of Decatur. (Perhaps they were the ones to donate the land for the cemetery.) There are no records for the old sections of the cemetery, but Township Clerk Delores Norman keeps a plot book for the newer sections.
