Glenn T. Sheets, age 88 of Delaware died suddenly Monday morning, December 3, 2007 in the emergency room of Grady Memorial Hospital.
He was born on April 12, 1919 near Ashley to the late Ernest G. Sheets and Clara (Turner) Sheets Keller. Following the death of his father in 1921, he was raised by his late step-father: Everett Keller. A graduate of Brown High School with the Class of 1937, he was a lifelong area resident. On September 20, 1940, he married his high school sweetheart; Rebecca (Dawson) Sheets, together they shared a wonderful life of 67 years making a home, raising a family, and building a farmstead. He was a lifelong farmer of both grain and livestock, operating the G. & J. Farm with his son Jim. While retiring in 1980 he remained interested in farming, last assisting with the harvest of 2006. Glenn served on the boards of the Farmers Exchange, First National Bank, National Beef Association, and Producers Livestock. He was named farmer of the year in 1948 by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. A member of the William United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau Council, Berlin Grange No. 629, he also enjoyed the community euchre club.
Upon retirement he became a self taught woodworking craftsman. His hand crafted items ranged from toy trains to furniture and cabinets. He favored walnut for his works, with most of the wood coming from family farmlands. He also enjoyed traveling far and abroad, and time spent wintering in Sun City West, Arizona. While proud of his farm and home, his family were always his number one priorities. Christmas's at home were always treasured. Often strong willed he will be remembered for his hard working traits, high ideals and expectations.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by son Jim (Carol) Sheets of Delaware, daughters: Mary Anne (Michael) Slattery of Bath, OH, Rebecca Sue Maxwell of Knoxville, TN, Grandchildren: Sarah Anne Maxwell (Anthony Meyer), Leann (Randle) Sheets Hamon, Laura Ann Sheets, Great-grandchildren: Aidin Kalbaugh, Rheyse Hamon, and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday 1:00 p.m. at William Street United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., Delaware with Rev's Grayson Atha and Sharon Beattie officiating. Friends may call at the church 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., two hours prior to the services. His wife Rebecca will be receiving friends from noon until the time of the services.
